Raymond Peyrille était le contremaître d'une équipe de terrassiers creusant le site à la recherche de restes mobiliers (os, pierres taillées). Ces terrassiers détruisirent le pied des sculptures par inadvertance. Transcription de la lettre avec orthographe de l'auteur : << Les Eyzies Le 16 Décenbre 1909 mon chèr Monsieur Lalanne jai a vous dire que Monsieur Peyronie est venu voir Les Graveure de La Bris Mandallnier je puis vous dire cher monsieur que jamais lon a vu une Esta(ions) si belle set du nouveaux se nèt plus de la Gravure set de lesqulture tes profonde au mois de 10 cantimêtre de Creux nous avons trouvé au mois 4 Chevaux et un Bison et peut être un Beaux rêne quil fot bien Dégagé vous savéz vous devriez vous entendre avec le propriétaire pour la Chêter je vais fermé a vec des poteaux et Des planche quar vraiments il serait bien malheure que lon labime venez le plutot posible votre trez Dévoué Peyrille Raymond >> English: Letter sent by Raymond Peyrille to Jean-Gaston Lalanne announcing the discovery of the Cap Blanc prehistoric sculptures. Raymond peyrille was the foreman of a group of workers that digged the site for artifacts such as mrehistoric bones or stone tools. the workers inadvertently destroyed the legs of the sculptures during the process. Line by line traduction of the letter (the original, broken, spelling was not rendered): << Les Eyzies December 16, 1909 My dear Mr Lalanne I have to tell you that Mr Peyronie has come to see the engraving in the Mandallier rock shelter I can tell you my dear sir that never such a nice (illegible) and news. This is not engraving anymore, but sculpture very deep, at least 10 centimeters. We have found at least four horses and a bison, perhaps a nice reindeer that have to be uncovered. You know, you should find an agreement with the land owner and buy it. I will enclose it with beams and planks because really it would be a pity if it is damaged Please come as soon as possible Yours very sincerely Peyrille Raymond >>
