These horny-shelledreptiles ranging from four to over six feet THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER ^ 34 ► JANUARY, NINETEEN THIRTY-FOUR in length, are not the best of bed fellows.The next few moments were full of action.Frantically the iguanas and I sought toescape. Dust filled the chamber and itsounded as though Bedlam were let loose.It is safe to say however I was the last toemerge. Fortunately, although I was some-what bruised, the camera was unharmed. half way through an opening which Ipulled out. In clear view was the face ofanother wall. After examination, this dis-covery led me to the conclusion that thegroup is far older than hitherto believed.As a matter of fact, the sum total of myinvestigations in Uxmal led me to the con-clusion that this ancient city far antedates

Itstands on a solid stone base approximatelyfive acres in extent, and over 30 feet inheight. The building is in four distinctsections, forming an enormous open square.Each wing is of a distinct style of archi-tecture and they were no doubt erected atwidely different periods. One morning I discovered a loose stone these practically unknown caves. The author and his three native guidesrescue by an unknown jungle hermit climaxed a strange adventure. the period generally assigned to it. Butsuch is the result of exploration amongMaya ruins. There is always surprise, al-ways the element of conflicting evidence.It is wise before passing hasty judgment,to make a thorough study of each andevery structure.
