English: Another photo from my one-day search for German industry in the Ruhr area in 1960. I was looking for heavy industry, and lots of smoke was a plus. :-) This is a coal mine and electric power plant of the Stinnes group, probably in Bottrop, near Essen. (Zeche Mathias Stinnes?) The location was provided by hsp 60 in comments on flickr. The Stinnes group was founded by Mathias Stinnes in 1808. One source says that in 1924, the various Stinnes companies were the world's largest employer, with 600,000 employees. The Stinnes interests were sold to Veba, an electric utility and mining company, in 1965. Later mergers made Veba part of E.On.
