The brickwork in the near, right foreground is part of the flue (leading to the chimney ahead) in which the arsenic was trapped. On this site the flue was over 50metres long. William Brunton patented his 'Brunton Calciner' in 1829 and greatly enhanced the speed at which arsenic (an impurity) could be removed from ore. Where the arsenic contamination was high it became economic to recover the arsenic as a by-product.
