Die Schächte bilden oft den einzigen Zugang zu weiträumigen Höhlensystemen mit Wasserführung.

Ihre Auffindung und Nutzbarmachung ist wegen der Versorgung der Truppe auf den wasserarmen Hochflächen des Karstes unbedingt notwendig. 20 Schächte in der Umgebung Pottensteins bieten geeignete Übungsmöglichkeiten.
