Summary

Description
English: This is a notable four-armed Ganesha found along the way to the Gupta temple ruins on the hill top.

It was likely carved after most of the caves had already been carved, possibly as the welcoming and auspicious stop prior to the pilgrim reaching the lost Gupta temple.

The notable aspect of this relief are two:

  1. it shows remnants of waterproof red pigment that ancient artisans used to coat the statues and reliefs – both for aesthetics and to protect the icon from weathering. Closer examination of other statues show this natural, plant-based pigment was used to coat all weather exposed sections of the temple and artwork. Remnants of the same red pigment are noticeable in the colossal Varaha panel.
  2. a devotee is shown carrying a banana tree as offering to Ganesha
Note: this cave is variously numbered as Cave 18 or Cave 2. Local ASI staff, when asked to clarify, were unclear what the official designation is.
