Selinunte, Sicily, 1998. This picture shows that drums were cut out at an angle, so that the base would be sloped relative to the perpendicular line of the column. This probably allowed the drum to be tipped and handled more easily during transport; the excess could have been trimmed off at any time before the column was set up. |
