מערת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה הוא מקום קבורתם של אבות ואימהות האומה הישראלית: אברהם אבינו, שרה אימנו, יצחק אבינו, רבקה אימנו, יעקב אבינו ולאה אימנו. רק רחל אימנו נקברה בדרך אפרתה, בפרברי בית לחם, על מצבתה הוקם מבנה קבר רחל. יעקב אבינו, אשר מת במצרים, בקש כי יעלו את עצמותיו למערת המכפלה ואכן בניו עושים כן: "וַיַּעֲשׂוּ בָנָיו לוֹ כֵּן כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּם. וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֹתוֹ בָנָיו אַרְצָה כְּנַעַן וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֹתוֹ בִּמְעָרַת שְׂדֵה הַמַּכְפֵּלָה אֲשֶׁר קָנָה אַבְרָהָם אֶת-הַשָּׂדֶה לַאֲחֻזַּת-קֶבֶר מֵאֵת עֶפְרֹן הַחִתִּי עַל-פְּנֵי מַמְרֵא.(ספר בראשית,נ', י"ג).
